He discusses his record label 2fresh, who he has been working with (such as Trey Songz, Drake & Boi-1da), and gives details on his new mixtape and album coming out soon. FTS: Rebstar – How did you come up with your name?

Rebstar: I got a friend who’s a graffiti artist from Denmark and he would always call me Rebstar. He did a Rebstar canvas once and I guess it just stuck with me. My real name is Rebin. I liked that it was associated with my real name.

FTS: That’s cool. Get him to do artwork of you. It’ll look live.

Rebstar: Yeah we’re gonna work together in the future. He’s mad talented.

FTS: Why did you choose music? You had the vital choice of going into law school.

Rebstar: I rapped before I started studying law. And I played the piano before I rapped. So music has always played a part in my life. I moved to the U.K and tried to study law and rap on the side, but I soon realized that I can’t do both. That’s when I decided to move back to Sweden and give my music a shot. And here I am today. No regrets.

FTS: Yes, definitely no regrets. Seeing how successful you are, and the progress you have made, is there anything you have learned along the way?

Rebstar: I’ve learned a lot. I’m still learning. So far, the most essential thing I’ve learned is that nothing is impossible, and that you need to be comfortable with the music you make. Find your sound.

FTS: That’s great advice for aspiring musicians. Who would you say are your favourite/top emcees? Have you had any musical mentors along the way?

Rebstar: First name that comes to mind is Redman. He’s always been a favorite. I’ve never had a mentor. I learn things the hard way. I’ve taught myself everything. Musically I’ve just been inspired by everyone around me and the music I listen to. Whether it’s Kanye or Atmosphere, I’ve really learned a lot listening to the artists and what they have to say.

FTS: Speaking of Redman, have you been following the Vibe Best Rapper Ever contest, and the feud between Joe Budden and Method Man?

Rebstar: Not really, I just read something about it, Joe felt he should be above Meth on the list or something? Things are usually taken out of context. I don’t know anything about this case though.

FTS: Ok, it’s a ridiculous contest that Vibe is holding, and the ranking of the artists are really bizarre and incredible in my opinion. Where do you feel you are at with your career at the current moment in terms of goals/accomplishments?

Rebstar: Honestly, I feel like I’m just getting started. I haven’t done anything yet. I’m hungry. I’m working harder than I ever have before. However I’m not in any rush to put out an album. I’m gonna take my time and do what I feel comfortable doing.

FTS: Your album is going to be called Second Base right? I think that’s a great title for your current position in your career.

Rebstar: Yeah that’s what it’s called. I’m working on my mixtape right now – Rebstar’s Arrival. I’m coming. And I’m coming hard….pause

FTS: Pause…wait for the applause. Are you overwhelmed with the success of your first single, ‘Without You?’

Rebstar: I was just told it’s getting airplay oversees which is nice. I think it’s really a hate/love song. Either you fuck with it, or it’s not your cup of tea. The reception has been dope though. I try not to get caught up in the hype. But people show me love and that’s cool. But the feeling I get when people tell me they’ve cried to that song – that’s overwhelming for me.

FTS: How did you hook up with Trey Songz to feature on your single?

Rebstar: We hooked up through a mutual friend. We played him my first verse and he liked it. I already had a hook but he had an idea for the hook that he wanted to do, so we chopped it up. I laced my 2nd verse and he knocked out a bridge. Things went mad smooth from there on.

FTS: That’s good to hear, showing Toronto love on my end. Can we expect to hear some Boi-1da produced tracks from you?

Rebstar: 1da is family. We’ve knocked out a few joints when he was in Sweden. I got some of his beats on the mixtape, and we’re gonna work on my album as soon as I fly over. I fuck with T-Dot.

FTS: Yeah I’m sure you’ll be selling out shows hear soon time. Promoters need to holla at you. Speaking of T-Dot, Drake’s delivery got him buzzin’ like a pizza man, and as he is affiliated with Boi-1da; any plans on working with him?

Rebstar: I fuck with Drake. We got stuff cooking up. We’ve been cool for a good minute. I actually hooked up with 1da through him. I’m glad to see him getting love from, well, everyone, lol. It’s well deserved.

FTS: Yeah, that’s love in the heart of the city. What would you say about your writing habits? Do you write your verses down pen and pad style or go in the booth and pull a Weezy?

Rebstar: I write. I write my ideas down and take my time. I like playing with words on the paper.

FTS: W are your plans for the future, what’s up with Rebstar, with your label, label mates, producers your gonna be rolling with?

Rebstar: Rebstar’s Arrival, the mixtape, is coming soon. New single in June, video in July. My label is 2fresh and we’re just getting started. Check out the blog at www.2fresh2fresh.com to stay updated. Holla atcha fuckin boy.
